The Power of Story

Why do we love movies, TV shows and books? It's the amazing power of story. Stories allow us to see and experience things that we don't experience in our everyday life. Personally, I love sci-fi! I love the ability to escape into a great movie with heroes and villains and impending doom! I love that the hero wins because I want so badly for the good guys to win in my story. Stories are relatable because they speak to a deep desire we have as human beings. The desire to matter and make a significant difference in the world.

I find that when I really love a specific movie, tv show or book it's for a reason. I look at the characters that I love the most and I see the deep desires of who I want to be. I love the Lord of the Rings. I know, its a little nerdy and I don't care! I have many favorite characters but two of my favorites are Sam and Eowyn. I love the loyalty and love Sam shows not only to his friend but to the quest. He believes in the quest as much as Frodo does but shows it differently. He has the inner strength that carries Frodo to the finish line (literally).

Eowyn is a shield maiden from Rohan and she voices one of my greatest fears in her conversation with Aaragon in The Return of the King “What do you fear, lady?" [Aragorn] asked. "A cage," [Éowyn] said. "To stay behind bars, until use and old age accept them, and all chance of doing great deeds is gone beyond recall or desire.” The fear of being stuck, of not accomplishing anything and of not making a positive impact on the world around me is terrifying. I don't want to simply exist! I want to make a positive impact in the world and in the people who know me. In the same way that Sam showed extraordinary courage and loyalty to Frodo and to the quest, Eowyn showed great courage in being who she is. She lived true to herself and to a greater mission and that is the resounding call of my heart as well.
